Employees of the Tesla Gigafactory Berlin Brandenburg work on a production line of a Model Y electric vehicle. Tesla has backed away from an ambitious plan for innovations in gigacasting, its pioneering manufacturing process, according to two sources familiar with the matter, in another sign that the electric-vehicle maker is retrenching amid falling sales and rising competition. Tesla has been a leader in gigacasting, a cutting-edge technique that uses huge presses with thousands of tons of clamping pressure to die-cast large sections of the car's underbody. One of the two sources familiar with the automaker's gigacasting operations said the suppliers involved are now adapting Tesla's three-piece process for the next-generation vehicle. Both sources said the automaker decided last autumn to halt work on the more innovative and difficult one-piece casting process.

"German car manufacturers are world leading, they do not have to fear Chinese competition," Lindner said. Competition in the electric vehicle, or EV, market in China and Europe, as well as the U.S., has been heating up in recent months. This came ahead of Scholz's visit to China earlier this month, during which he warned against unfair competitive and trade practices.

BYD unveiled three new cars for its Fang Cheng Bao brand on April 16, 2024, in Shenzhen. SHENZHEN – Chinese electric car company BYD is rapidly expanding its lineup to include vehicles that compete with traditional automakers in the mass market, Tesla on the premium end and Jeep in the off-road segment. BYD on Tuesday unveiled three new cars for its Fang Cheng Bao brand: an off-road "Leopard 8" SUV, a "Super 3" SUV geared toward city driving and a "Super 9" sports car. BYD launched its Fang Cheng Bao brand last summer with a focus on "personalized needs of consumers," particularly in off-road vehicles and sports cars. The brand's first vehicle, a hybrid-powered off-road SUV called "Leopard 5," launched in November with a starting price of about 290,000 yuan ($40,845).

BYD teased its upcoming electric pickup truck which the Chinese auto giant said it would launch in 2024. BYD plans to launch its first electric pickup truck this year, as the Chinese giant steps up competition with global auto firms, from Ford to Tesla. The midsize-to-large pickup truck has been developed for the global market, BYD said in a press release. The pickup will look to compete with the likes of the Ford Ranger and F-150 Lightning, the Toyota Hilux and the Tesla Cybertruck. BYD doesn't sell in the U.S., the most popular market for pickup trucks, but it has a presence in other popular markets for this type of vehicle, including in Thailand.

It looks like Tesla is about to regain its title as the world's top electric car maker. China's BYD reported on Monday that sales plummeted more than 40% for the first three months of 2024. Elon Musk's company is set to reveal its own quarterly delivery numbers on Wednesday. The slide has caused some to question whether Musk's company deserves its spot in the "Magnificent Seven" group of mega-cap tech stocks. A drop in deliveries would cap a "nightmare quarter for Tesla," said Wedbush analysts in a research note last week.

Vehicles for sale at a Tesla store in Vallejo, California, US, on Thursday, March 2, 2023. While Tesla continued to post strong sales growth last year, helped by aggressive price cuts, the electric-vehicle maker is expected to report weak quarterly sales as early as Tuesday. Caliber cited strong associations between Tesla's reputation and that of Musk for the scores. Tesla sales are projected to increase by 3%. "The EV slowdown is shaping up to be a Tesla slowdown," Cox analyst Stephanie Valdez Streaty said during a conference call Thursday.

Deliveries are the closest approximation of sales reported by Tesla but are not precisely defined in the company's shareholder communications. Tesla's Model 3 is about $4,000 more than that. Aging lineup, early days for Cybertruck While EV sales are still gaining popularity worldwide, the growth rate has slowed. In a push for end-of-quarter sales, Musk recently mandated that all sales and service staff install and demo FSD for customers before they hand over their cars. Despite its name, Tesla's premium option requires a human driver at the wheel, ready to steer or brake at any moment.

STR | AFP | Getty ImagesIn the race against Tesla for the global electric car market, Chinese automaker BYD is pushing hard overseas despite rising barriers to the U.S. market. Given policy uncertainty around Chinese EV exports to major markets like the U.S. and Europe, BYD is seeking to bolster overseas sales by moving production to regions perceived as more friendly. The U.S. has tried to support adoption of electric cars domestically, but sales penetration is well below that of China. EY predicts the electric car market in the region will grow exponentially to at least $80 billion a year in sales in the next decade. The rapid growth of BYD and other Chinese electric car companies has other automakers worried.

The bill, a key part of US President Joe Biden's economic agenda, offers tax credits worth up to $7,500 for EV makers, excluding any "Foreign Entity of Concern." BYD isn't the only company turning its back on the US EV market. Given that EV sales growth is stalling in US, it's perhaps little wonder companies like BYD are not too bothered.

Using the CNBC Pro Stock Screener tool, we screened for the most overbought and oversold names in the S & P 500 based on their 14-day relative strength index, or RSI. Stocks with a 14-day RSI greater than 70 are considered overbought, meaning they could be at risk of a pullback. Conversely, stocks with a reading lower than 30 typically means that they're oversold and possibly gearing up for a short-term bounce. Energy tech services provider Baker Hughes was one of the few oversold names that analysts have a buy rating on, according to CNBC's screen. Of the overbought names, Boston Scientific has the highest potential upside according to analysts surveyed by LSEG, at about 9.3%.

While EV sales are continuing to grow, they are doing so at a slower pace, research shows. Elon Musk warned a slowdown in sales growth was coming when Tesla reported earnings on Wednesday. The Warren Buffett-backed EV maker, which sells its vehicles in more than 60 countries and recently overtook Tesla on global EV sales, put an early focus on affordable models such as the $10,000 Seagull. EV sales surged 40% year-on-year in the last three months of 2023 —a "strong result by any measure," as the industry research noted. Aran Waid, senior analyst at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, said growth in EV sales globally was continuing but that it had "fallen short of automaker expectations."

I'll describe how options traders will bet the bottom is in and the levels they may find attractive to do so. Tesla's margins of nearly 11% are twice those of the 2 biggest U.S. automakers, but a bear will point out that Porsche margins are 13%. Even still, it's not clear that the legacy automakers can compete long term with Tesla or China's BYD.
